Since recently, all patients at the Cancer Centre receive a reusable water bottle, courtesy of the Gatineau Health Foundation.
Each year, the Gatineau and Hull hospitals’ laboratories perform more than 70,000 analytical procedures on blood products to determine blood groups, verify the presence of antibodies, ensure pregnancy follow-ups, and more. In addition to these, an average of 25,000 blood products are also used for transfusions to patients in our region, including patients suffering trauma or undergoing cancer treatments or surgery.
Currently, the CISSS de l’Outaouais has to analyze each blood sample manually. The process entails multiple steps and takes several minutes, resulting in heavy workloads for technicians. These delays also make urgent cases hard to manage, since ongoing analyses often need to be restarted from scratch in order to respect strict protocols
The acquisition of two automated analyzers (one each for both the Hull and Gatineau hospitals) would make it possible to process several samples simultaneously, in addition to offering the possibility of adding new samples during a process, without compromising ongoing analyses. A bloob sample analyzer:
“When I learned the specifics of our current blood bank procedures and discovered that (…) the analysis of blood samples is done manually, I knew I just had to make a contribution to this project, not only for the patients I treat, but also to do my part in modernizing the CISSSO (…) As you know, for most families, childbirth is a moment of natural joy and happiness – soon-to-be parents are often so excited at the prospect of meeting the unborn child that all other considerations are thrown to the wind. Unfortunately, there are situations where things do not happen as the couple or the doctors had planned. Indeed, in some situations, childbirth can be accompanied by significant bleeding that may require blood product transfusions, sometimes in large volume. To ensure we are ready for these kinds of cases and for many other eventualities, blood group screening and testing for circulating antibodies are essential parts of medical check-ups for pregnant women (…) Armed with all these arguments, I had no trouble convincing my colleagues in the Gynecology-Obstetrics Department.
