Since recently, all patients at the Cancer Centre receive a reusable water bottle, courtesy of the Gatineau Health Foundation.
Solid water plates are part of the equipment used by the medical physics team at the cancer centre. Their uses include measuring and calibrating the radiation output of accelerators during radiotherapy cancer treatments.
Solid water plates are very important tools because they can simulate the characteristics of the human body during radiation measurements. Specialists use this equipment to simulate the patient’s body based on body mass and can thus calibrate the accelerators according to the individual patient’s treatment plan.
The CISSS de l’Outaouais’ cancer centre already has a number of solid water plates to perform the necessary calibration tests. However, a greater variety of sizes and shapes will increase the accuracy of the calibrations performed by the specialists. Proper calibration of the devices will provide more effective treatment and reduce side effects in patients undergoing treatment.
